As kids in the St Louis area start school this week, families are settling into routines that change each year as children mature. When your child becomes too old for daycare or other after school care alternatives, it is a big step to allow them to come home on their own. Parents are aware of many potential hazards kids face in the hours between school’s end and when we arrive home, so we constantly seek ways to help kids navigate away from harm.
Kidshealth.org has many good suggestions for parents to help kids with the time after school. Primarily, set up expectations early in regards to:
- The schedule (call parents, have a snack, do homework, chores, free time, etc..)
- Expectations around friends in the house, amount of tv or videogame time allowed, which appliances can be used (microwave, toaster oven, knives) and of course, homework.
Smartphone Alerts When Kids Arrive Home
Technology has made it even easier for parents to help children with these expectations through the home security system, video cameras and mobile phones. Smartphone controls can be set up so you receive text notification when kids arrive home. Adding video cameras to the home security system enables you to actually see when the kids arrive and if anyone comes in with them. You are able to look in to see live video of what is happening in your home, no matter where you are, as long as you have an internet connect and the installed app.
If you have a security system, most can be upgraded to include the smartphone control capabilities, and Butler Durrell can install the system upgrades and monitor the security system. If you have been considering a home alarm system, this is a great time to install security with the added functionality of smartphone control.
We have special offers running through September 30, 2013 on security system installation as well as Smartphone controls. See our specials and schedule an appointment today for a quote on security system installation or upgrade.
